Steve Martin has a famous saying: “Be so good they can’t ignore you”. With the same title Cal Newport’ve written a book about career advices. The main idea is that instead of follow your passion or listening to your gut instincts, try doing one job for years, then with mastery comes satisfaction.
I partly agree with the idea. However, I’m more inclined to accept the carrer guide based on 80000hours.org research. Try to investigate different low-risk options during your university years, because there’ll be differences between the likeability of the jobs you try.
It just my personal idea, an anecdote, but after working in the programming field for a year, and experiencing one of the worst period of my life due to the conditions (sitting for hours alone, isolated environment) which related strongly to these kind of jobs, I wholeheartedly advise to anyone to try different options while they can, but do not expect it to be your passion or perfect option career wise.
